Hi all,
First post! I'll be as brief as possible. I play in a folk-rock band and switch between mandolin, standard electric guitar (currently a Jazzmaster), and another electric guitar tuned to open G or D (currently an Epi Les Paul with Burstbuckers).
I'm growing tired of the Les Paul. I don't know what it is but I think the tone is too thick for some of our material. The harder rocking songs sound great through the LP (I use a Maxon overdrive pedal and Big Muff for distortion), but it's not quite for the more country-tinged tunes. And overall it has that Gibson him bucket sound...I think after 5 years, I'm discovering I want more bite.
But I don't want to sacrifice sustain (which I consider pretty crucial for electric slide playing) and while I love single coil for standard playing, I don't necessarily want a single cool slide guitar. I'm thinking about the wide range humbucking pickups in the Fender Telecaster Deluxe 72 RI and the Fender 72 Thinline Tele. (I know these pickups are not as good as the original Lover-designed ones, and would probably upgrade them anyway).
Played both guitars at a store yesterday. Felt pretty torn between the two...I prefer the Thinline for the simplicity of the controls, the weight (soooo light!), and the radius (9.5" I believe) feels more forgiving when I need to finger chords. I prefer the Deluxe for the look (that walnut is just handsome as hell), and poooossibly the tone. The one I played seemed brighter and bolder than the Thinline but it was a quick playing session, so who knows. I figured the 12" radius on the Deluxe might be helpful for slide, but it feels a tad uncomfortable for fretting.
Does anyone have specific thoughts about these models when it comes to slide playing? Thanks in advance!
